Picking from a vast back catalogue of great hits, singles and album tracks Southbound play Thin Lizzy’s ‘Classic’ material from the mid-70’s to the very early 80’s, re-creating the sound of one of the world’s best loved and most respected rock bands.
The idea behind Southbound started many years ago when Craig played in local rock covers band in Edinburgh. Although performing a few Lizzy tracks, becoming a full Thin Lizzy tribute was never really an option supported by other members of the band and the idea remained just that, an idea. But things change, and after many years of playing rock covers, and even a foray into the function band circuit, Southbound became more than just an idea and Craig decided it was time to do what he’d been thinking and talking about for years.
Contacting Colin, who Craig had previously played with in other bands, brought in one of the finest bass players around. Colin’s easy style, ability to learn the music and feel that Philip Lynott put into Thin Lizzy was a perfect start to the sound the band was looking to achieve. With two members still to go and remembering the fact that when Brian Robertson joined Thin Lizzy he was a teenager led to two young musicians, in the shape of Craig’s eldest son along with his friend Ross, being recruited on guitar/vocals and drums. Now, still in their early late twenty’s, both boys are clearly accomplished musicians with an amazing ability to capture the sound and feel of the Lizzy guitarists, and the vastly under-rated drumming style of Brian Downey.
Late 2011 saw songs being chosen and rehearsals beginning in Banana Row in Edinburgh. Very soon the band gelled and demonstrated the ability to learn the material quickly and accurately, making rehearsal time extremely productive. Two good sets were soon “in the bag” and the band ventured out to find and play gigs. Although the bands chosen focus is the “Classic” material, the set list has expanded by requests from the many fans the band has found, to include both some earlier and later songs. The sound is still very definitely based around the Gorham/Robertson era and they have been known to do all of Live & Dangerous on special nights!
Since the beginning, 6 years ago, Southbound have travelled all across the Scotland from Dunoon in the West, through the Central Belt and down to Borders and back again, playing gigs in pubs, clubs and venues to appreciative and receptive audiences.
A recent quick line-up change has brought in a new bass player in Greig Archibald who, from his first gig, has shown a great feel and understanding for the music. With new venues constantly being booked up, and also return gigs in many of the existing venues we’ve played so far, this year will be the bands busiest so far.
Almost 6 years on since the band was formed and from the opening chords of Jailbreak through the Celtic rock of Emerald, the slow blues of Still In Love With You to the final ringing notes of Black Rose, Southbound are still paying tribute to the music of Philip Lynott and Thin Lizzy in a venue near you!.
