Neil Chan is an award-winning fingerstyle guitarist and world musician. His music on acoustic guitar and voice fuses elements from musical cultures around the world including jazz, flamenco, Carnatic and Andean music.
Employing advanced techniques such as fretboard tapping and cross-cultural percussive styles, he articulates his music in creative and innovative ways that strive to open your eyes and ears to new musical possibilities. Neil holds a Bachelors Degree in Music (Honours) from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore. He was awarded the full Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music Scholarship in 2011, and was twice awarded the Artistic Development Grant to intensively study traditional music in Bali and fingerstyle guitar in Austria.
He has spearheaded numerous cross-cultural musical initiatives including the Yale-NUS World Music Concert in 2016 and numerous world music workshops on various cultures including Andean, Balinese, Chinese and Indian music. He has also studied Carnatic music for 7 years, has performed as a mridangist at multiple Carnatic concerts in Singapore. As a guitarist and vocalist, Neil has performed at renown stages locally and internationally including the President’s Star Charity live telecast, Mosaic Music Festival, Singapore Night Festival, NUS Arts Festival, and emerged champion of the Singapore Street Festival in 2012. He has collaborated with South Korean guitar virtuoso Sungha Jung at his concert at the Kallang Theatre (2016), and was invited as a special guest to open mega church Willow Creek’s 42nd Anniversary service in Chicago (2017). His original music has also been featured live on 98.7FM and Clicknetwork.tv.
He is currently the official ambassador of Maestro Guitars Singapore and has conducted fingerstyle guitar workshops in collaboration with Maestro Guitars, People’s Association (PA), L Luthier and Musica Workshop in Kuala Lumpur. He has also served as a judge for numerous local talent competitions including the Sungha Jung Guitar Competition in 2016.
